Our growing concern for the appearance of teeth and especially for their health, has generated an accelerated evolution of the research process in the medical and dental fields, leading to the development of new methods of clinical investigation and treatment.
One such method aimed at early detection of dental caries is fluorescence light cariodetection. It aims at the early detection of both subclinical lesions consisting of minimal demineralisation, impossible to see with the naked eye, as well as incipient carious lesions, located in areas difficult to access both radiologically and by direct and indirect inspection. The principle of the method is simple and consists in the different fluorescence capacity of intact tooth enamel compared to demineralised tooth enamel.
With the classical methods of investigation, errors in diagnosis occur because of the marked areas of pigmentation that sometimes appear in dental fissures. The adoption of a prophylactic measure, cleaning under a jet of particles with sodium bicarbonate will eliminate this shortcoming, but will not be able to establish with precision the existence of preclinical lesions with demineralization and will avoid in some situations an invasive treatment.
